“Custom trailers” is a phrase that is often tossed around in the trailer business. But what exactly does it mean, especially in terms of your trailer needs? Literally, customization is defined by one source as anything made or modified to a personal taste. Here at ATC and Motiv Trailers, we are proud to say that our custom trailers have really made their mark in the trailer industry – and even in the wider business arena. Not every trailer manufacturer will do “custom trailer” work. The bigger companies much prefer to turn out standard, identical, cookie-cutter trailers. In truth, these type of trailers are far easier to design and produce. Our custom trailers require significant sales and engineering design time, as well as painstaking craftsmanship by our production workers. This can sometimes make the process a little longer and the costs a bit higher. Car haulers cover a wide range of trailers. Ranging from 16 foot open car haulers to a 53 foot fully enclosed transporter car hauler, there are car haulers to meet your specific needs.
Price is one consideration. Open car haulers are the least expensive of the car haulers. You can purchase 18 foot open car haulers for $2,000. Nicely equipped 24 foot enclosed car haulers set up for the weekend race enthusiast could be purchased for less than $15,000. Whereas, fully equipped enclosed 53 foot car haulers could carry a sticker price in excess of $250,000.
Weight of the car haulers is another consideration. Federal licensing requirements, and federal excise taxes are based on gross vehicle weight ratings of car haulers in combination with the GVWR of the tow vehicle. Car haulers with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or more require special licensing for the driver and additional federal excise taxes are due at time of registration.
Most important in determining the right car hauler is how it will be used. Will the car hauler be used to haul only one type of vehicle or is it multi use? Do the dimensions of the vehicle(s) to be hauled require special car hauler configurations or dimensions? Is it used primarily for storage or will you be using it also as a portable garage? Will you haul other equipment with you in the car hauler which would require additional storage bins, cabinets, hanging racks, etc? Will you always have the ability to power the car hauler with shore power or will you require on board power generation? All things to be discussed with your local dealer who can help you determine the right car hauler for you.

If your hauling needs dictate hauling multiple cars, a stacker trailer may just be the perfect solution. Stacker trailers give you the ability to haul cars double decker style. Stacker trailers are shorter and easier to maneuver behind your tow vehicle. Stacker trailers incorporate a car lift into the design of the trailer to allow for stacking the cars inside. It may be a rear gate lift. In this type of lift, the rear door doubles as the car lift to the second level. The second level is a full length fixed floor, and the car lift is on the outside of the trailer. Or a rail lift may be used. lift may be. This type of lift, housed completely inside the stacker trailer, has a stationary platform that moves up and down inside the stacker trailer. In this type of car lift, the second level is fixed in front of the lift mechanism. Both have their benefits. The rear gate lift frees up floor space inside the trailer for other uses. However, the rear gate lift requires additional space behind and above the trailer to operate. The interior rail lift is typically less expensive.
Stacker trailers are commonly towed by Class A motor homes. Stacker trailers are similar height to Class A motor homes and can be painted to match the tow vehicle. In shopping for stacker trailers, weight is generally an issue. Stacker trailers may be built with a steel frame, wood floor, steel rail lift, all of which add significantly to the overall weight of the stacker trailers. Another option is all aluminum stacker trailers. These stacker trailers frames are all aluminum, aluminum floors and aluminum rail lifts.

Just for fun, I typed in the phrase “trailer manufacturers” into Google to see what would come up. I wasn’t too surprised to get 11,400,000 results. One of the first sites that came up was www.natm.com , the official website of the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers. Here at ATC (The Aluminum Trailer Company) and Motiv Trailers, we are very proud to say that we are an official member of the NATM. What does this mean to you exactly, as a consumer? Well, only trailer manufacturers that have passed a strict “Guidelines Compliance Consultation” are allowed to display the NATM certified decal. This decal indicates our commitment to building a safe, outstanding product – and ensures that our trailers are meeting federal regulations and industry safety standards. Since we are a trailer manufacturer that specializes in the custom-built, unique trailer, it is especially critical to us that we are following all safety regulations and standards to ensure you a safe and well-built trailer. Not every trailer manufacturer has taken the time and effort to be NATM certified. Take a moment to look for the red, white, and blue sticker on any trailer you are considering – if it is missing this emblem, you can’t be certain that the trailer has been built in compliance with NATM guidelines. If you have a high volume of cargo and are looking for a safe, secure way to transport it, look no further than ATC and Motiv gooseneck trailers. Many customers want to know what is the longest bumper pull trailer that we can build. We have built up to 34′ long bumper pull trailers, but strongly recommend switching over to a gooseneck of fifth wheel trailer for this size. Because of the hitching mechanism and the location of the weight on the tow vehicle, large trailers are much safer when designed with a gooseneck or fifth wheel hitch.
Another big benefit to gooseneck trailers is the additional enclosed storage space above the bed of the truck. Many customers use this enclosed space as a safe place to keep valuable cargo and protect it from the elements. Access doors are often used on either the driver side of the trailer or on passenger side of the trailer to allow easy access to this area. We generally do not recommend adding cargo doors on the front of the trailer due to potential leak hazard.

Custom concession trailers can be made and used for so many applications. ATC has been involved in some unique concession trailer designs. A particular concession trailer that comes to mind is the mobile bar trailers we built a couple of years ago. This particular customer wanted to provide a mobile bar for corporate events, tailgating and all around good times. Each side of this concession trailer could open up and become a serving window for the bar tenders. A keg with cooling system and all the items you need to bring the bar to you where put in this trailer. Later the customer added exterior mounted LCD monitors satellite and all the items you need to have a fun event. ATC can custom build you almost any concession trailer. Motiv Trailers, by ATC – have you heard of us? Perhaps…perhaps not. The ATC name is probably a bit more recognizable; Motiv Trailers is still a relatively young product line. ATC, or Aluminum Trailer Company, has been a top notch manufacturer of aluminum trailers since the year 2000. In 2005, we decided to expand our product offering into the steel trailer arena, and purchased a company by the name of TN Trailers in Shipshewana, Indiana. Slowly but steadily, ATC workers took the TN steel trailer product and made it their own by applying the same high standards of craftsmanship and quality. In 2006, ATC had made such radical changes in the TN product line, we decided it needed a new name worthy of its new quality – and there the name Motiv was born.
The word Motiv just had a perfect sound to it. It implies a driving force, and makes one instantly think of motion. In fact, our slogan here at Motiv is “Innovation in Motion”. We created this awesome product line because we saw a need in the steel trailer market for a high quality trailer.  Weatherford International Oil Services just received their first commercial trailer from the Aluminum Trailer Company. Weatherford contacted ATC when they had noticed the commercial trailers on our website http://www.aluminumtrailer.com/custom trailers/field service . They needed a rugged commercial trailer that could be used as an office in just about any environment. With the numerous commercial trailer pictures on the ATC website they were able to pick a design that worked for them and get their trailers extremely fast. After narrowing down the options and determining the floor plan of their commercial trailer they decided on an affordable solution. Pictured is a similar unit to what Weatherford purchased.
 I personally had the opportunity to take Weatherford their first commercial trailer. These particular units will be working in the beautiful state of Wyoming. As you may or may not know the temperatures can be very cold in Wyoming so these commercial trailers were designed with an exceptional insulation package. The crews will be able to be comfortable in the extreme cold temperatures they called upon to work in. ATC and Motiv Trailers builds a full line of stacker car haulers. We build them in bumper pull and gooseneck configurations in either steel or an aluminum frame. We also recently added a single stage hydraulic lift gate as well as a hydraulic screw lift gate. The hydraulic screw lift gate is much easier to operate and allows a customer to raise and lower the lift inside a building without the 8′ lift posts extending above the height of the trailer.
Customers use stacker car haulers for a myriad of uses. Many customers use the stacker lift gate trailers for transporting race cars or motorcycles out to the race track. By adding a lift, racers are able to load a second race car and bring loads more gear. And what racer doesn’t need room for more tools?

Let’s say you are in Bemidji, Minnesota and you just found a wonderful antique shop that has all the missing parts to your eclectic furniture collection ranging from an amazing little painted Shaker clock reel ($6,500), a mint condition Shaker tall chest of drawers with a semi-graduated, molded lip ($48,000), amazingly they also have the 1959 Barbie No. 1 “The Diamond Barbie” ($85,000). You can’t wait to have these wonderful treasures in your sitting room in the Hamptons, but alas! Do you really want to entrust your precious cargo to the hands of Joe and John the local hauling guys? I know, they carry insurance, but wouldn’t it make more sense to bring your treasures home by yourself? Of course it does!  So, unless you’ve been living on the moon for the past six months, you know our economy is in a recession. The RV and trailer industry has been especially hard-hit. We’ve been luckier than most here at ATC and Motiv Trailers – but our business is still slower than we’d like.  Four years ago the Aluminum Trailer Company began to build its first Dog House trailer. With our company being located in Indiana I had never even heard the term Dog House trailer. Nabors well service was looking for a way to lighten their load and design a dog house trailer that would be better for their service crews (Rough Necks).
When I ended up seeing my first dog house trailer I could see how they got their name. As you look at the back of a dog house trailer it would have one entry door with a round top roof looking much like a dog house for two legged creatures. If you take a moment to see (picture) what Nabors and ATC designed looked nothing like a dog house trailer of the past. This trailer was designed to be pulled with a ¾ ton truck, it was very rugged, and provided a great environment for the crews to get break from the harsh elements they work in.
I had the opportunity to deliver the first Aluminum Trailer Company Dog House trailer to Nabors. It was great opportunity to meat some of the staff at the corporate offices in Houston Texas. The attached picture is of the very first trailer we delivered them. As the corporate leaders toured the custom dog house trailer they decided to add even more features to keep their crews happy. For instance we added a microwave, refrigerator, generator and air conditioning. Nabors now has the nicest Dog House trailer in the industry. RV trailers are growing in popularity. Their versatility as a recreational vehicle for the family and a trailer to haul the family toys, all terrain vehicles, motorcycles or off road bikes makes the RV trailer a perfect purchase for many traveling families.
There are 2 basic types of RV trailer: the garage/cargo area and the living quarters are separated with a hard partition wall or to maximize the utility of the space, the living quarters are incorporated into the garage/cargo area. This kind of arrangement includes fold away beds, removable tables, and shared cabinet space. Depending on your RV trailer need will dictate the type best suited for you.
Cargo carrying capacity is the biggest concern in determining the RV trailer to fit your needs. Living quarter amenities add considerable weight to RV trailers so make sure you have sufficient carrying capacity left to haul your cargo. Consider purchasing a trailer with higher GVWR than you think you will need. Be sure your tow vehicle is rated appropriately.
You will also want to make sure the cargo area footprint is large enough for your stuff. Consider putting all of your cargo as you would like to arrange it on an open space and measure the footprint. Maximum exterior width for RV trailers is 102″, which equates to approximately 98″ of interior width. You will need to take into consideration the rear door opening to make sure the cargo will fit.
Finally, think about how you will be using the trailer while at your destination. Will the vehicles be parked inside when not in use, is there an exterior awning to “expand” the living space?
RV trailers are an economical way to take your toys with you on family vacations. Consider these few tips before making your purchase.
