Every once in a while we get customers asking us why we use Advantech floors in our trailers… Here’s the scoop.
There really is only one downside to Advantech and that is that customers sometimes initially think it is just cheap chipboard and we are cutting corners to save cost. A simple look into Advantech proves otherwise.
The true facts are that Advantech was created by Huber Woods out Charlotte, North Carolina for the housing industry. They created this board because housing contractors were complaining that the standard plywood sub floors on their houses were delaminating when it sat unprotected in the snow, sleet and rain. Huber woods created Advantech to withstand the moisture that was destroying the plywood subfloors. Advantech is a manufactured wood board but it is different than any other OSB on the market. It is made with non-water soluble glue and it is compressed with 4 times the pressure than that of a normal OSB. If you look at the board close up you will clearly see the difference between this board and any other OSB.
Advantech is used exclusively in our snowmobile trailers and it works better than any other product. The snow comes and melts but it does not penetrate the board. All you have to do is simply sweep the water out of the trailer. Due to the density of the board it also does well holding up against the sharp snowmobile carbides. With a plywood floor, you need to change the plywood every few years because the carbides tear the plywood to sheds. With Advantech the carbides will scratch and mar the surface, but it will not penetrate the board. We’ve seen many “well seasoned” snowmobile trailers come in with noting more than scratches on the floor… nothing like a plywood floor.
Another huge benefit Advantech provides is in on our wide body car haulers. Advantech can be ordered in any width we want, whereas plywood can only be ordered in at 96″ wide. On a 102″ wide body trailer that means that there has to be a silly 3” plywood seam the entire length of there trailer. With Advantech we order our boards in at 99″ wide so it PERFECTLY fits into a wide body frame design.

The next time you are at the race track, or for that matter just driving down the road, check out the number of trailers you see. Then check out the number of gooseneck style versus tag trailers. Goosenecks trailers will probably out number the tag models two to one. There are a number of reasons you see so many goosenecks. Let me tell you about a few.
If you are looking for the best and easiest way to trailer your cargo you want to make sure you checkout a gooseneck trailer. Gooseneck trailers provide the maximum in payload capacity as well as providing a great ride down the road. The design of the “gooseneck” allows for more weight to be transferred to the tow vehicle. The terms gooseneck refers to the part of the trailer that essentially sits on top of the pick up truck or tow vehicle. With this design the front of the gooseneck trailer rides farther forward on the truck and allows more of the weight to be transferred to both axles on the tow vehicle.
This additional weight transfer can be very beneficial. With the gooseneck design approximately 20 percent of the trailer weight is transferred to the tow vehicle. When you compare this to 10 percent on a “tag “ trailer, the weight transfer can become rather substantial, allowing you to haul more payload.
Because more of the weight is transferred to the tow vehicle with a gooseneck the drivability of the truck and trailer combination becomes much easier. Simple put, you don’t have all of the trailer weight riding on the very end of your tow vehicle hitch. In some cases tag trailers can tow poorly. With the weight resting over the axles of the truck, towing a gooseneck trailer is much smoother

One of my favorite things about blogging is highlighting past projects where we have completely exceeded a customers expectations. A few years back we were asked to build a highline aluminum gooseneck trailer for a guy up in the Toronto area. As I learned more and more about the project, I began to understand that he didn’t want just any aluminum gooseneck trailer, he wanted the best aluminum gooseneck trailer ever built.
This aluminum gooseneck trailer was going to be used for his snowmobiles in the winter and his ATV’s and motorcycles in the summer. The trailer was designed and built with a full living quarter and bathroom design. One important feature of the project was that the customer wanted private sleeping quarters for six people.
What came out of our engineering department was a 46’ gooseneck stacker complete with two slide outs, custom attic bedroom, Amish–made hardwood cabinetry, custom submerged bathroom layout, and a stacker lift system layout that was capable of housing up to 6 snowmobiles and loads of gear.
Arguably, this may have been the best aluminum gooseneck trailer we have ever built. Check out these images!

You could have had an enclosed trailer. My guess is that many people think they can’t afford an enclosed trailer but have they considered all of the advantages? Do you know what the difference is between inclose or enclose? Or the variants of those inclosed or enclosed? Well as it turns out there isn’t any difference they both mean the same thing. However the preferred spelling or usage just happens to be “enclosed”. Now that may not mean much to most people but I just happen to be in the business of making enclosed trailers, and since we advertise we really do try to get things like spelling and grammatical nuances correct. I don’t know how much longer that will actually be important in the age of texting and twitter it seems that you can just make things up as you go along.
Let’s get back to that enclosed trailers thing for a moment. Of course you were wondering what that means? Well weren’t you? An enclosure structurally is like a fence around property or more specifically like a porch on your house,but now you put glass around it. Voila! You now have an enclosed room that used to be an open to the weather porch. That may not mean much to some people, but try reading the Sunday morning paper on your porch in Indiana in January. You would immediately understand why enclosing it with glass makes a lot of sense. If I built enclosed porches, I would continue down this path but I don’t so I won’t.
I make enclosed trailers (www.aluminumtrailer.com) and I was just trying to get my point across in a way most people would understand. You can buy many types of trailers and many of them are open like your front porch, and they work very well for some things, but if you want things dry and not exposed to the elements of the weather you need an enclosed trailer. What kind of enclosed trailer? Well I could tell you now but that would spoil my fun. LOL (that’s one of those texting things I was talking about). Did you ever wonder how some things got their names? No, I’m not talking about etymology. Although I’m sure in some sense that is in fact how things like that come about. Anyway the name I’m talking about is gooseneck trailers. You see I build trailers, and for the one or two people that have read something from me before that’s what I do on my day job. The rest of the time I try to figure out what things mean and how they came about. Occasionally my day job and my real life intersect. And well why do we call something a gooseneck trailer?
Well you know when it gets right down to it most of us (people that is) are really pretty simple and we like things that way. Therefore if you think about it we generally stick to things we already know. In this case most of us have seen a goose and are familiar with how it looks. I’m not certain about this next part but I’ pretty sure that geese were around before trailers. So humor me here and try to visualize a goose the squat body and extended neck. Now think about building something like that, in this case a trailer. A squat body and in front a lone neck, voila a gooseneck trailer.

The Aluminum Trailer Company (ATC) and Motiv Trailers build a wide range of trailers. We build enclosed cargo trailers, tag, stacker and concession trailers. However, where our company really shines is with our enclosed gooseneck trailers.
Our gooseneck trailers (either steel or aluminum) can be used in a wide variety of applications. A gooseneck trailer has a variety of benefits over a tag trailer. The most obvious one is the trailer length. While our tags are limited to around 30 feet or so in length, our goosenecks can go all the way up to 53 feet! This allows for tremendous flexibility in customization and use. With a gooseneck (or a fifth wheel) the trailer hitch will be connected either within the bed of the pickup or to the back of the semi trailer This is different from our tag or cargo units which are attached to the rear of the tow vehicle. If you have a high volume of cargo and are looking for a safe, secure way to transport it, look no further than ATC and Motiv gooseneck trailers. Many customers want to know what is the longest bumper pull trailer that we can build. We have built up to 34′ long bumper pull trailers, but strongly recommend switching over to a gooseneck of fifth wheel trailer for this size. Because of the hitching mechanism and the location of the weight on the tow vehicle, large trailers are much safer when designed with a gooseneck or fifth wheel hitch.
Another big benefit to gooseneck trailers is the additional enclosed storage space above the bed of the truck. Many customers use this enclosed space as a safe place to keep valuable cargo and protect it from the elements. Access doors are often used on either the driver side of the trailer or on passenger side of the trailer to allow easy access to this area. We generally do not recommend adding cargo doors on the front of the trailer due to potential leak hazard.

Many people are at first intimidated by a gooseneck car hauler, they see the size and a new type of coupling mechanism and it is something that is unfamiliar; scary! A better understanding of how each system works helps to eliminate this fear and help a customer make a better decision.
The biggest difference between a tag tow behind trailer and a gooseneck trailer is the design of the hitching mechanism. The purpose of having the hitch in the bed is to enable the truck to carry the weight of the trailer directly over its own axles by the location of the gooseneck coupler. This not only makes for a better ride for your cargo, it also makes for a smoother safer pull in your truck. The second benefit to a gooseneck car hauler is the location of the pivot point of the trailer. A normal gooseneck or fifth wheel installation is in the bed of the truck instead of behind the truck. This provides for smoother, sharper turning capabilities on a longer trailer. Whether you choose the gooseneck (ball style) coupler or a fifth wheel plate, both mechanisms assure a positive lock between the trailer and your truck.

Back in the day before kids, my wife and I used to deliver trailers on a semi-regular basis. We had always delivered bumper pull trailers, but my wife quickly got tired of the truck rocking up and down as we went over the bumps in the road. One day I brought my carsick-prone wife along as I delivered a gooseneck trailer and the whole world changed in her eyes. With a gooseneck trailer the cab of the truck rode smooth and straight and didn’t buck up and down over the bumps.
So why is it that a gooseneck trailer pulls so much smoother than a typical tag trailer? With a gooseneck trailer the weight of the trailer is distributed directly over the rear axle of the truck. The truck suspension is then able to carry the weight of the trailer without bouncing the frame of the truck (and the cab) all over the road. In a typical bumper pull trailer, the weight of the trailer resides about four feet behind the rear axle of the truck. When the truck and trailer hit the all-to-common bumps in the road, the suspension of the rear axle can only absorb so much form such a great distance away.
Now, don’t get me wrong, our ATC and Motiv bumper pull trailers pull very well, but when you compare a 30′ tag trailer to a 38′ gooseneck trailer, it just isn’t a fair comparison. The 38′ gooseneck trailer will pull smoother every day of the week. Why not look at some of our gooseneck trailers now!

The Aluminum Trailer Company (ATC) has been building an all aluminum gooseneck trailers since early 2001. ATC is the only company that builds an all aluminum frame on a gooseneck trailers. Most manufactures add steel reinforcements to the axle area or the gooseneck area. These areas tend to take the bulk of the stress on gooseneck trailers.
Because ATC has designed its gooseneck trailer with a full perimeter frame our gooseneck trailer is strong enough to handle your biggest load without the need for steel reinforcements. This unique design allows ATC to build one of the lightest gooseneck trailers in the industry. ATC’s perimeter frame gooseneck design differs from our competitors design in that our sub frames strength comes from our tube frame that runs all the way to the outside of our sub frame. Not like most gooseneck trailers that rely on a frame the includes outriggers to support their side walls.
ATC builds gooseneck trailers in lengths from 32’ up to 53’. ATC’s gooseneck trailers inside heights come with a standard height of 7’ but can be built with an interior height of up to 11’. The standard width on an ATC gooseneck trailer is 97 ¾”. The overall width of our standard gooseneck trailer is 102” from fender to fender.

There are many opinions on which is better. You can simply search Google to see thousands of results. However, I want to highlight a few things to consider when looking at a goose neck trailer. Gooseneck trailers:
- Eliminate Sway and fishtailing
- Increase storage capacity
- Increase load capacity
- Provide Easier mobility
- Are more secure
While these benifits are nice, there are a few drawbacks to gooseneck trailers. They include:
- Gooseneck trailers generally are more expensive
- Your “start up” cost may be higher if you are not already setup with a gooseneck hitch
- Some feel that connecting to a gooseneck trailer can be more difficult as you have to climb in the bed of your truck to complete the hookup process
- You lose some of your truck bed storage.
